We chose the name because of what the early years actually are: not a head start, not a race, but the ground everything after it stands on. A child who feels safe, seen and unhurried at three is ready for what comes at six.

How we work

Four things we do not compromise on

Attachment before activities

A new child spends their first week settling with one carer before anything else is expected of them. Learning does not start until a child feels safe enough to let go of your hand.

Play is the method

Pouring water teaches volume. Sorting bottle tops teaches sets. Arguing over a truck teaches negotiation. We plan for these rather than treating them as the gap between lessons.

Two languages, side by side

Kiswahili and English are both used through the day, and mother tongue is welcome. Children are never corrected for the language they reach for first.

We tell you the awkward things

Biting, a hard morning, a skill that is slower than the rest — you hear about it from us, on the day, not at the end of term.

Who is with your child

The people in the rooms

Every member of staff holds an early childhood qualification or is working towards one, and all are trained in paediatric first aid. Come in and meet them — we would rather you did that than read about them.

Centre manager

Handles enrolment, fees and anything that needs sorting out. The person to ask for if you call and are not sure who you need.

Lead teacher, pre-primary

Plans the CBC termly scheme, keeps the observation records, and runs the end-of-term conversation about how your child is doing.

Infant and toddler carers

Each carer holds a small key group. They do the feeding, the naps, the nappies and the daily note, so nothing is passed between hands.

Cook and support staff

Meals are cooked on site to the week's published menu, with allergy lists posted in the kitchen and checked at every service.

Questions we get most weeks

Can I visit before enrolling?

Please do. Come during the day rather than after hours, so you see the centre with children in it. Call ahead if you can and someone will be free to walk you round and answer things properly.

How does settling in work?

The first week is short and gradual: a couple of hours with you nearby, then a morning, then a full day. Some children need less, a few need more, and we follow the child rather than the plan.

What do I need to send with my child?

A change of clothes, a sun hat, and nappies and wipes for the under-threes. Meals and snacks are provided. Please label everything — a room of two-year-olds is not a careful place.

What happens if my child is unwell?

We call you straight away and keep them comfortable and apart from the group until you arrive. Children with a fever, diarrhoea or anything infectious need to stay home until 24 hours after it clears, for everyone's sake.

Do you follow the school calendar?

The pre-primary group does. Day care for the under-threes runs year round, including most school holidays, because that is when parents need it most. Closure dates go out in the term newsletter.

How are fees paid?

Monthly or termly, whichever suits you, with the details confirmed at enrolment. Ask the centre manager for the current fee schedule — we would rather quote you accurately than publish a figure that goes out of date.

Visits happen during the day, while the children are here, so you see the centre as it really runs. No appointment needed before 4pm, though a call ahead means someone is free to walk you round.
